Year 3 - It begins

Welcome to the Jolly Camper!  I'm Sara, the Jolliest of campers, and this is my blog.  Every year for the past three years, I've gathered up my children, packed my mini-van, and headed out on an adventure.  Two years ago, we camped in our van through 14 states.  Last year, we got smart, bought a TENT, and camped for 30 days through 30 states.  This year, we're finishing up the lower 48 states.  I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am that God lets me do this.  I'm not proud, I'm not lucky, I'm straight up BLESSED.
OK, so this year, we started with some car trouble.  I know, not the ideal way to start a trip.  I am fortunate enough to share the road with Ciara this year.  Ciara has been babysitting for us for the past two years, and she agreed to come along as my traveling nanny!  She's good people.  Anyhow, I'd had  an alignment done, and you know when you take your car to the shop and they start to "find" things?  That happened.  We ended up with an alignment, an AC belt a serpentine belt, and a new tensioner.  They were recharged the AC while they were in there.  I went from the shop to pick Ciara up, we loaded the van, and set out of San Antonio.  Excited and anticipatory, we drove 3 miles and realized the AC was not....cold.  Not even not cold, it was warm.  I called the shop.  "Give it a few days to cycle" they said.  I may be blonde, and I may not be mechanically inclined, but I KNOW I'm not going to make it through 10 hours of West Texas with a "cycling" AC.  I called my regular mechanic, and he got us in right away (I had strayed because he doesn't do alignments.  Never.  Again.). Apparently, you need the shredder valves IN the line for the unit to stay charged.  Mike at the Express Lube on Pat Booker in Universal City.  Go see him.
We didn't leave till almost 4pm with a air conditioning mishap, so 14 hours of driving later, we arrived in Denver just in time for breakfast.  My sister in law housed us for a few hours of sleep.  Once we'd washed the sleep out of our eyes, we loaded up for food.

Kristina is my sister in law, but honestly, she's closer to being my sister.  She stood up with me at my wedding to her brother, and I stood up with her.  We've laughed, cried, loved, experienced, and done life together.  She's an amazingly talented artist of paper and food (she's a graphic designer AND chef).  When she recommends food, I listen.  Sam's #3 greeted us with coffee and some AMAZING green chili omelets.  The kids crawled all over her, and they weren't denied hugs and kisses.  The visit was short, but sweet.  THANK YOU, KRISTY!
10 more hours of driving... but hey, 10 is shorter than 14!

Driving to the Grand Tetons from Denver was one of the most beautiful drives I think I've ever taken.  The green rolling hills and mountains growing in the distance gave hope to a destination.  We were slated to stop in Falls, ID to camp for the night.  The place we wanted to stay in Wyoming was a first come first serve campground, and we knew they filled quickly.  The plan was to stay in Falls, then leave early in the morning to get to Headwaters by 0900.  Ciara and I were tired, and the drive was taking longer than we anticipated.  With three hours to go, Ciara noticed a sign for camping on the left side of the rode.  We though, checking it out wouldn't hurt anything!

Warren Bridge is where we stopped for the night.  A quaint campground with a vault toilet, but a beautiful stream.  For $10, who could say no!  With less than a 2 hour drive to Headwaters, we set up the tent and called it a night...

But not before a quick jammie hike to the stream.

Folks, this is what it's all about.  In a tent with three beautiful kids, a friend and nanny, and God's paintbrush.  Really, who wouldn't be a jolly camper?

Day 10: Mile High City

July 28, nine days in to our amazing vacay and we are headed to.....DENVER, CO!  Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, and one of my best friends EVER (also my sister-in-law) were on the list.  We got in late, slept, and got up to GO!

First order of business were the Manitou Cliff Dwellings.  We walked through ancient carved cliffs learning about their customs and life style.  Basket weaving, cradle boards, hunting and gathering, and dwelling development were covered in a short tour.

From there, we journeyed up Pikes Peak.  Have you ever driven up a mountain?  I don't think I ever will again.  It was terrifying.  There you are, 10,000 feet in the air with a suggested speed of 35 mph with NO SIDE RAILS.  Just a soft, gentle drop off a CLIFF.  Did I mention it started raining?  And since the altitude climbed, guess what the temperature did....it dropped.  Guess what happens to rain when it gets cold?  IT FREEZES!  So I'm driving the 19 miles up past 14,000 feet with no side rails in freezing rain.  I don't know why they don't sell beer at the top.  I could have used one by the time we got to the summit.

Honestly, I think the only reason I got down with less anxiety was a mild hypoxia.  But we made it!

Garden of the Gods was only a few miles down the road, and the rain had let off, so, we hiked it!  It is truly a marvel to see, and it is very well named.  Spears of rock, ascending to the sky, with boulders precariously mounted on the spears.  Below is "Three Cathedrals".  The weather was perfect, and thankfully held back the rain the entire time we were there.

The day ended driving back into Denver where SIL and I took the kids to a horrible Mexican Restaurant, Casa Bonita.  The food sucks, but there are cliff divers.

It was a packed day, and we slept well.  We woke up the 30th, had lunch with a friend of mine from RN school (small world), shipped some cookies home from Victory Love and Cookies, said our good byes to SIL, and headed WEST.  Next Stop....GOBLIN STATE PARK!

The Jolly Camper Makes Contact

I have another blog.  It's supposed to be about the crazy things my kids say, but our family camping trip started to take over....so I am making contact as The Jolly Camper.  My four kids and myself (the JC's) are heading on a grand adventure.  24 days, 14 states, camping in our 2008 Nissan Quest.  No no no, you misunderstood.  Not camping in a  tent OUTSIDE our van, camping IN our VAN.  Down By The River!  (Sorry, but I had to).  Here's the rout.  Follow along as we have 36 hours till departure!

Our Rout.
We start at our humble abode in Cibolo, TX....
First order of business in HOUSTON!!!!!  We'll spend a few hours at the beach, just letting the kids and I enjoy a picnic lunch and relishing in the fact that we are ON VACATION!  Next we're off to New Orleans, LA where we'll spend two days exploring the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, and some other cool FREE sites.  After car camping in NOLA (see a later post on car camping), we head north to Memphis, TN!  Mud Island boasts a to scale replica of the Muddy Mississippi where kids can play and learn.  Looks fun to us!  From there, ahhhhhhh, up to Galesburg, IL, my home town!  We'll spend several days with mom and dad, eating delicious spinach bisque from The Landmark, exploring Starved Rock, and playing at Lincoln Park.
From there, we head WEST!  Good bye Galesburg, Hello Omaha, NE!  I don't really know why I put an exclamation point there....its Omaha....BUT there is the Lewis and Clark Landing.  Have you picked up on the fact that I'm a nerd and I'm raising nerdy kids?  One day in Omaha is about all the fun we can handle before we head to......DENVER!!!!!!!!!  We are super excited to stay with my sister-in-law (but more like sister) while we adventure around Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods.  Siri hasn't seen mountains since she was one, and Annika never has.  I'm excited to see their reactions!  Two days is all we can spend in the Mile High City, then its off to Salt Lake City, UT!  Goblin State Park was featured in the 1999 version of "Galaxy Quest" and looks like an amazing playground for kids.  We can putz around SLC for a day and a half before we make the long trek to Redding, CA!  Home of the Sundial Bridge and very close to Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen, Whiskytown Lake, and Bumpass Hell, and most importantly, FAMILY!  My in-laws, out-laws, and so so so many friends, we'll stay several days in Redding before we head south-east

Bakersfield, CA is the ONLY place we'll be staying in a hotel.  A nice one.  Yay, Bakersfield!  From there, it's only a short jaunt to Lake Havasu City, AZ.  Do you know what's in Lake Havasu City?  The London Bridge.  Yup, the real one.  The one that was falling down.  It has been fully reassembled right over Lake Havasu!  Quick stop to see a landmark, then its off to the big one...THE GRAND CANYON!!!!!!!!  We are spending two full days at the Grand Canyon, camping in the National Park.  Alia was there once when she was MUCH younger, and I KNOW the kids are going to love seeing the amazing sites.  From there, more caves as we spelunker on over (is spelunker a word?) to the Carlsbad Caverns!   We will spelunk, explore and bat-watch before making our final leg back home.

I am so unbelievably excited to show my kids SO much of God's GOOD work in the parks and lakes and rivers and mountains of the 14 states we are visiting!
So yup, thats our rout.  Is there anything/anyONE else we need to see/visit?  Let me know in comments bellow :)  Thanks for reading!
